Happy Birthday to My Wife

Today, as Sara James and I (as well as so many others) celebrate Tricia's 30th birthday, I want to share a few of the things that make her amazing, both as a wife and as a mother. As Tricia's husband, the last four and a half years of marriage have been the best years of my life. We have walked through a variety of adventures, some bigger than others, but none without specific memories of living and loving together. Before we married, we both agreed that we wanted, that we hoped for, a few years together before trying to begin a family. Those were sweet times: late night coffee at Fido's in Nashville, with only Jack the Dog waiting at the house, long days at school during Tricia's first year teaching (when she was teaching both English and Drama), and long evenings on the Busby's deck laughing until our faces hurt. I had married my best friend, and I was loving our life together...I honestly didn't think it could get any better.

I was sitting in the living room when Tricia called me into the hallway. She was standing outside the bathroom with news that changed our lives. Two lines, this time, instead of one. I've decided that God is gracious to give us nine months to prepare for a child. Tricia and I grew even closer during those months leading up to May, but as the day neared, we couldn't contain our excitement. We had already given our daughter a name; we just didn't know what she would look like. We talked about her all the time; we just hadn’t heard her make a sound. However, when Tricia woke me up in the early hours of that Monday morning, I knew it was time. We timed her contractions, I threw some clothes in a bag, and we drove to the hospital. It was calm, it was quiet, and it was unlike everything I had ever seen in a movie. We held each other's hands as I steered through the empty streets.

Sara James is, without a doubt, the love of our lives. She is equally each of us, with glimpses of something unique, something all her own, that even still reminds us of one another. Yes, our schedule has changed. Going out requires a babysitter and a bit more planning, but we still find times and ways to be alone, and together. Of course, at some point during those times we talk about our daughter, about how much we love her, and how grateful we are for her. Often times, after we've checked on Sara James before going to bed ourselves, Tricia will look at me and say "I just want to go wake her up and play!" If you have seen those two together, you would know that the feeling is mutual. Sara James loves her mamma! When Tricia walks in the room, Sara James lights up (in the same way that I have for over ten years). Even at sixteen months, she knows that safety, comfort, love, and protection rest in her mamma's arms. Because she is an amazing wife, there was no question in my mind that Tricia would be an incredible mother. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful thing to watch. I'm thrilled to know that Sara James will be able to learn what being a woman means from the most wonderful woman, and in that...my life is perfect.

Happy birthday Tricia...we love you so much!
